The Great Corporate Blackout of 2008

When: day after New Years

where: workplace

what: blackout

why: someone probably into Sheryl Crow's newer stuff (ex:like that song she did with Kid Rock) hit a powerline a couple of miles from office, thus being the unwarranted epicenter of a 5 mile diameter blackout

described what happen: well, first of all the traffic lights weren't working, and I usually have to make a left turn into traffic , so that was a sonumabitch.
Then I go inside the office, and it's lights out. As if I was reenacting Die Hard, but without the gunshots and a very sweaty Bruce Willis. My co-worker Jason, who's way into the Call of Duty 4, starts telling me this blackout reminds him of Call of Duty 4. I go get some milk in the kitchen, and upon entering said kitchen, I have to announce "I'm here" with firm-as-Kucinitch-ideals voice, less I happen to walk into another employee. it turns out that I almost do crash into another employee anyway, after I skilfully deposit lowfat milk into my "save the environment" mug I got as part of my company's effort to go green.

Then I hear word that the blackout will last for at least 3 hours. That rocks.

After navigating through dimmed hallways like a kid through a haunted mansion, I go back into my desk, inundate mug with Peanut Butter Capn' Crunch, and get to town. I love Capn' Crunch.

I then take out my laptop, hook up Mbox, and start mixing the song We Fought You. I have 10 vocal takes recorded, and wanted to hear which was best one. Half an hour later, after hearing Jason tell some pretty gross jokes, co-workers Shana and someone else are doing a Dunkin Donuts run to get coffee and donuts for everyone. Some of the bigger directors are just around my cubicle, speculating how long this will last, since there is no work being done by anybody. The whole building is incapacitated.

I love work today. I wish there were more days like this.

I go to Jason, and he starts telling me how he unlocked a scope for his gun when he plays online call of duty. He seems to be a little too excited about it.

Then the lights turn on.

2 hours earlier than expected.

My smile fades, I turn off mxbox and begin the wait for the great corporate reboot of 2008.
